Not by Might: The Call to Lead Through the Holy Spirit and God’s Word
Zechariah 4:6 - "Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,' says the Lord Almighty."
In Christian leadership, the temptation to depend on human strength is constant. Leaders may trust their education, experience, or strategies to carry out the work of ministry. But Scripture gives a clear reminder: the building of God's Kingdom is not a human achievement. As Zechariah 4:6 declares, "Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,' says the Lord Almighty."
Throughout history, faithful leaders have acknowledged this truth. Evangelist Charles Spurgeon once said, "Without the Spirit of God, we can do nothing. We are as ships without wind. We are useless." His words echo the biblical principle that leadership in the church must be Spirit-empowered, not self-driven.
Yet, the Holy Spirit's role in leadership is not just about receiving strength. The Bible calls Him the Spirit of Truth (John 16:13). His work is to lead believers into the truth of God's Word, illuminating Scripture and guiding the church according to Christ's will. Without the Spirit, leaders may build large ministries, yet miss the heart of the Great Commission.
Jesus Himself told His disciples to wait for the Holy Spirit before beginning their mission (Acts 1:8). It was not enough that they had walked with Him or heard His teachings; they needed the Spirit to empower their witness. This shows that the work of evangelism and discipleship is impossible without His help.
Relying on the Holy Spirit is not about seeking emotional experiences. It is about surrendering to God daily, trusting His Word, and seeking His guidance in every decision. Leaders must pray for the Spirit's help to teach, to lead, and to serve in humility. True spiritual leadership combines the authority of Scripture with the power of the Spirit, working together to fulfill the Great Commission.
Today's church faces a danger when leaders rely on business models or human logic to grow ministries. But the Lord's work must be done the Lord's way - through His Spirit and in obedience to His Word.
As leaders seek to serve faithfully, may they remember this unchanging truth: without the Holy Spirit, they can do nothing of eternal value. But when they depend fully on the Spirit and stand firmly on Scripture, the gospel can reach the ends of the earth, just as Jesus promised.
Prayer:
Lord, help us to remember that the work of Your Kingdom is not by our strength but by Your Spirit. Fill us with the Spirit of Truth, guide us in Your Word, and lead us to serve with humility and faith. May every step we take in ministry be empowered by You, not ourselves. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
